General note First edition limited to 100 copies. Engraved by W.H. Lizars, edited by David Laing from the original manuscript executed in the year 1542. Illustrated with the armorial bearings of 308 of the ancient nobles, barons and principal families of Scotland.

Ownership and custodial history St John Museum copy is from the Library of Kinfauns Castle, Perthshire (with the armorial bookplate of Lord Gray on front pastedown); armorial bookplate of the Rawlinson branch of the Scottish Tweedie family (with the motto "Thol and think") and with inscription "Michael Forbes Tweedie" on front pastedown. Presented to the Order of St John in England by Michael Forbes Tweedie (with his letter addressed to the Librarian of the Order of St. John laid in the volume).
